Understanding Trauma
Trauma is more common than many realize. Studies suggest 70% of adults have experienced at least one traumatic event. As a wellness practitioner, you'll inevitably work with trauma survivors—whether they disclose their history or not.
What is Trauma-Informed Care?
Trauma-informed care (TIC) is an approach that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and integrates knowledge about trauma into practices, policies, and environments.
The Four R's
- Realize: Understand the impact of trauma
- Recognize: See signs of trauma in clients
- Respond: Apply trauma-informed principles
- Resist Re-traumatization: Avoid practices that could cause harm
Core Principles

Create physical and emotional safety in your practice environment. This includes:
- Consistent, predictable interactions

- Calm environment
- Transparency about what to expect

- Operating with transparency
3. Choice
Empower clients with choices about their care:
- Offer options when possible
- Ask permission before touching (massage, etc.)
- Respect refusals without pressure
4. Collaboration
Work alongside clients rather than doing things to them:
- Involve clients in planning
- Value their expertise in themselves
- Share power appropriately
5. Empowerment
